New Range of Teva Footwear Now in Stock

The Square now has its stock of Teva footwear for the summer. Check out our range of Teva in store or online.

In 1984, a young Grand Canyon river guide revolutionized the footwear industry when he created the world's first sports sandal. This idea soon spawned a brand, and the new adventure of Teva® was born.

It's been 25 years since then and not a moment has gone by that Teva® (that's "teh'-vah," not "tee-vah") hasn't been hard at work developing products that enable and encourage your adventure. Of course, given their heritage, there is an obsession with water, and Teva's passion lies in identifying and enhancing the areas in which water effects an adventure. For Teva, water presents a paradox. It is the source of a year-round playground, but it simultaneously poses a year-round problem. Anyone who has ever slipped on a patch of ice or been forced to deal with soaking wet socks can attest to this duality.

Essentially, Teva® has two fundamental responsibilities: to play and to protect. We play in the water, but we also see the need to be protected from it. Teva's responsibility is to manage this delicate balance, so you can go forth without reservation. Armed with a quarter-century worth of knowledge and technology, Teva is dedicated to developing products that strike this balance to deliver the most out of your adventures.

Joe Heads to Wales For Summertime Rock

Joe pulling hard © Joe Davies
Summer 2010 has so far yielded a number of short breaks away from our usual Peak District climbing haunts. These have included a particularly memorable weekends bouldering in North Wales.

Memorable not only for the ace weather and quality rock we found but also for the truly awful nights sleep in a sloping field that followed the two and a half hour drive from Sheffield! Our plan had been to spend day one in and around the Llanberris pass, warming up at the roadside boulders, before heading further afield to focus on projects at a number of venues. However the temperature rose throughout the day, making it difficult to climb with a combination of sweat and poor friction on the rock making life difficult for all (plus the exhaustion due to the lack of sleep from the night before).

Day two, and with the sun came an urge to visit the coastal bouldering venue of Port Ysgo around an hours drive from our campsite. With it being very hot still we took our time and a barbeque. Again we waited until early evening to climb relishing the opportunity to wrestle with old foes, with some success, making visible progress on attempts made on previous visits. After a somewhat perfect sunset the moonlight on the sea lit our escape from the beach making it back to Llanberris in time for curry.

On our third day I decided to give showers a miss due to a brief inspection of the facilities revealing a thriving algae population. I was relieved to discover however that my Icebreaker base layer stayed fresh and stink free despite the absence of personal hygiene. Following breakfast we returned to The Pass to put in some work on a few problems. Fuelled on little other than Cliff bars and water we climbed into the evening making the most of the glorious weather. Few problems were completed but it was satisfying to know the groundwork was set for future visits.

Berghaus Training Day

The line taken up Y Garn
The Square staff members Steve and Ben were recently given the opportunity to go to North Wales on a Berghaus Training day. This coincided with the release of the new Berghaus Mera Peak jacket.

"The day was to take place at Play y Brenin, The National Mountain Centre, right in the heart of Snowdonia. When we arrived late the night before the training day we were welcomed almost immediately with a pint which we felt we thoroughly deserved (it's a long drive from the Peak District)! It was just the one however as it was to be a “crack of dawn start” the next day.

Windy on top of Y Garn.
So at 7:30am (that’s right 7:30!) we piled into the dining room for a cooked breakfast. We then made our way to the briefing room where we were shown the new and improved features on the jacket. After this it was into the hills.

Fortunately for us (unfortunately for Berghaus) it was a glorious day with no rain for us to test the jacket's waterproof qualities. It was however very windy and I can tell you all now that the Mera Peak is definitely, totally wind proof. We had arranged the night before that we would do a classic scramble up Y Garn. It was fantastic and the views were superb. On the descent we dropped down a less well known track which ended up being more of a scramble than a walk. We all felt it was a valuable experience for us and can't wait to do it again (here's hoping).

All in all it was a great day out, thanks to Berghaus for organising it."

Swizzy Time

Heading off for a hard days climbing.
For the second year running I have spent March in the Ticino region of Switzerland nestled in amongst the Alps. It is located close to the Italian border about 3 hours from Milan. The area has become world famous over the last 15 years or so, largely thanks to Fred Nicole (world famous top class climber) whose first ascents include Dreamtime and La Boule.

I visited two main areas, Cresciano and Chironico, both are granite and offer 1000’s of boulder problems for all climbing abilities. If you like steep rock with positive holds you will love the climbing in Switzerland. As for my trip I succeeded on some personal climbing goals as well as finding plenty to go back for. My climbing showed a marked improvement from the previous year which for me defines a good trip.

Although bouldering was the main focus of going to Switzerland you have to rest and preserve skin due to the physical nature of the climbing. The surrounding area is extremely picturesque offering superb walking on well signed footpaths as well as skiing. The nearest major town is Bellinzona which has plenty of cafes, bars, pizzerias and an interesting history. You can also explore the many castles and battlements here. One of our favourite rest day activities though was relaxing in the Gites garden drinking wine, eating chocolate and reading a book while surrounded by wonderful snow capped peaks. Lovely!!

Free Ranger Guided Walks in The Peak District

The Peak District National Park organises more than 250 free guided walks every year. The Ranger's knowledge of the Peak District's history, agriculture and wildlife is often superb and they can provide a fascinating insight into 'The Peak'. The walks give you the chance to explore this beautiful region of England and cater for many different walking abilities. Families, wheelchair users, people new to the countryside and experienced walkers can all get something out of the annual list of free guided walks. Several of the walks that are organised by the Peak District National Park start in or near Hathersage. If you are in the area, pay us a visit at The Square in Hathersage.
